Franchise filmmaking is king now, and because of this, any revival feels cynical by default. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, are perhaps among the least cynical films ever made: sincere romps through time and the afterlife starring sweet morons who love rock n’ roll. They lack any sort of edge or hint of darkness (even when they go to Hell) and delight in their lack of sophistication. There’s not a lot there, but that’s what makes them charming. This makes the idea of a third film, released over 30 years after the first, feel like a stretch. Yet it might be my favorite movie released this year. I saw Bill & Ted Face the Music at a drive-in theater. It was something my partner and I had always wanted to do (drive-ins, not Bill & Ted) but lacked the opportunity. In a pandemic, however, drive-ins are among the only safe ways to go see movies outside of your home, so we borrowed a car and drove to see the only new movie playing at the drive-in that night. Neither of us had particularly strong feelings about the film — we were more excited about the act of seeing a movie than we were the movie itself — but it felt like the right one to see on a warm summer night with the windows down and truly bad concession stand food balanced on our laps. Bill & Ted Face the Music, like its predecessors, is a simple movie. Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) and Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter), have been told since they were teenagers that their rock band, the Wyld Stallyns, will write the song that will unite the world. However, they are now middle-aged men who somehow haven’t managed to pull it off. Because of this, the world is falling apart. Time and space are collapsing, and Kelly (Kristen Schaal), an emissary from the future, arrives to tell the Stallyns that they have until 7:17 p. m. to write the song or else everything comes to an end. To solve the problem with minimal effort, Bill and Ted decide to try what worked in the past: using a time machine to jump to a future where they’ve already written the song, and bring it back to the present. This goes wrong, and the duo spend the rest of the film trying to smooth over increasingly dire mistakes they make in the future as they continue to neglect the present. We never think as clearly about the present as we’d like to. I suspect that’s even more true now than it ever was. What, I wonder, will hindsight reveal about this year and how we received it? I watched Bill & Ted Face the Music in a remote New Jersey drive-in because drive-ins are among the few diversions available to me as the world falls apart. That collapse is never far from my mind, least of all during the 91-minute movie about two middle-aged men staring down the end of the world and trying to avoid doing anything about it. Throughout Face the Music, Bill and Ted travel further and further into their future to find that they never change. Their lives just get worse, because they never stop running from their problems, from trying to cheat their way out of doing the work to fix anything. Their future selves can’t improve until Bill and Ted stop seeking them out, because then that means they’ve stopped cheating their way into the song that saves the universe, and actually started making it. For the last year, I had been planning on getting married this month. That, like a lot of other things in 2020, is no longer happening, postponed for a year. I don’t know if that’s enough time. I doubt it’s enough time. Fretting about it, however, feels frivolous. So I don’t. Instead, I look at all of the other things there are to be angry about right now, and I feel that instead. I don’t know where to put all the rage. I can send it to the future, which looks worse the farther into it I reach. I can send it to the past and despair over every incremental step that brought us here. Both seem like terrible decisions for the person who is living here, now. So at the end of Bill & Ted Face the Music, I cried, because the present is the one thing I haven’t figured out yet, six months into calamity. I don’t know if the decisions I’m making today are the right ones or wrong ones, and I’m running out of fictions to spin myself to justify living and working and paying bills like the world isn’t literally on fire. I cried because the wedding we thought we’d have will probably never happen, because no one is getting the tomorrow they hoped for. And I cried because at the end of the movie everyone does stand up and face the music. Not because they’ve figured anything out, but because they love the hell out of each other. That’s all they really know how to do — be excellent to each other and play music really fucking loud. It’s just about all I know to do, too.

The prophecy relayed by rufus never specifically said BILL AND TED would unite the world. He said Wyld Stallyns music would. And it did. They founded Wyld Stallyns - and the lineup may have changed over time but without them there's no Wyld Stallyns at all - let alone Billie and Thea who wrote the actual song while they were in the band. And like the ending said - it's not the song that mattered. It's that everyone was united (paraphrasing). This movie had everything going against it. I expected everyone behind it to at the very least give it their best shot and for the movie to have the same heart as the previous 2. But whether it was actually going to be good or not was up in the air. Random thoughts: - we have been severely deprived of Alex winter over the last 25 years. Lost boys. Freaked. Bill and ted. Liquid television. He has a fantastically unique sense of humor that I've missed and we need more of. I hope to see a lot more or him in cinema. - this was a more personal reflective story for bill and ted. It was neither an excellent adventure nor a bogus journey. It was much smaller in scope despite the stakes being somehow higher. They need to face their fears and insecurities. - I likes the characters of the daughters but not the actresses who played then. The blonde didn't have enough to do but was better than the brunette who had a more prominent role but wasn't as good. - the daughters time traveling seemed tacked on. As an homage to the 1st movie. The band they assembled seemed inconsequential. - the conclusion was obvious from the first trailer and I was hoping I was wrong. But I wasn't. And the movie is pretty heavy handed about it throughout. "Preston and logan" would be the true heroes. Kind of a slap in the face to the story of the original 2 saying bill and ted were the heroes. EDIT- After rewatching the first 2 movies I appreciate this even more. Also, Wyld Stallions uniting the world was Rufus' theory? At the end of part 1 he plucks the princesses out from the past to bring them to Bill and Ted. Why did he do that? Did he know something? I think this was really clever writing actually. By having the daughters play such an integral role in the band it made them - and in turn the princesses - very necessary to the story. What was mostly likely just a tacked on happy ending in the first movie came full circle to add importance to the princesses, daughters, and Rufus himself. Maybe I'm wrong and there's some time travel nonsense that will prove me wrong. But if I think about it any more I'll get a headache. And I like to think that's what it was. - missy marrying deacon was fantastic - Dennis caleb McCoy, while essentially playing a variation on the character of death, pretty much made the movie for me. - I want a 4th. But i know we're probably not getting one. Where do you go? This movie needed to serve as a conclusion and to put a bow on everything. As well as it possibly could have. Limited budget. No studio wanted to make this. The creators fought tooth and nail to get it made and I admire and appreciate that. Covid. Trying to write a sequel to a beloved cult classic 25 years later. It shouldn't have succeeded but it did. Maybe it had to play it a bit safer than bogus journey. It wasn't nearly as experimental. But it was extremely satisfying. These movies never took themselves super seriously. And while they often followed their own rules more than other films (particularly time travel movies) they also broke their own rules when the story called for it and wrote themselves into a corner on occasion. And face the music had to deal with that and write themselves out of those corners. I know they wanted to do a lot more with it and it's clear a LOT was cut. But they did as good of a job with it as they could have possibly done. - what was with the princesses traveling around doing nothing? I expected that to come into play with the story but unless I missed something it didn't. Had to have been cut unfortunately... - old bill and ted dying in a nursing home with their wives and children not there was a BIT more depressing than I would have liked. The movie said the official timeline before the song was written was that they lived sad and miserable lives. Kind of a bummer. - I would have loved if this movie had a bigger budget if only to add an extra half hour or so to the movie because I wanted more. I know i nitpicked a lot. But overall they're minor things. It wasn't the big adventure I wanted but it wasn't meant to be. And bill and Ted just make you feel so good. All about unity and coming together. Realistically this was probably a 3. 5 out of 5. (EDIT: after rewatching 1 & 2 - this is probably a 4/5. Very smart writing I didn't initially pick up on) The worst of the trilogy (still a good movie just not as good as the other 2) But it gets 5 stars for overcoming everything going against it and existing at all, having the same heart, and coming at a time when it's desperately needed.

Not excellent maybe, but by no means bogus either, this cheerful Bill & Ted threequel brings the story of our two laidback heroes up to the melancholy autumn of their middle age. Alex Winter is Bill – and he’s eerily the same – and Keanu Reeves is Ted; though with that dark mop of hair framing his now rather Easter-Island-stern face, Ted looks more forbidding to me, as if carrying the baggage of Neo (from Matrix) and hitman John Wick. But with his weirdly lovable awkward gestures, Ted clearly still has no idea how or why to move his arms. Like the other two films, this is written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, and the director is Dean Parisot, renowned for the sci-fi comedy classic Galaxy Quest. Bill & Ted was always the non-stoner stoner franchise, a comedy high only on its own absurdity and sweetly serious idealism: as ever, it reminds me (in the best possible way) of a kids’ TV show by someone like Bob “Rentaghost” Block – something to put alongside Doctor Who and Wayne’s World. George Carlin, who played the boys’ cosmic time-travel guide Rufus in the first two films, died in 2008, and makes a virtual-reality appearance here courtesy of archive footage; Kristen Schaal plays his daughter, Kelly. Nowadays, Bill and Ted are getting on in years, and their band, Wyld Stallyns, has suffered a cataclysmic loss of popularity. The apples of the men’s respective eyes are their music-mad twentysomething daughters, each of whom has effectively been given the name of their dad’s best friend: Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine). This crossover further seals their friends-for-life dedication. Each young woman is of course weirdly similar to her old man, a single-joke mannerism that restricts these performers a fair bit. The terrible crisis arrives when Bill and Ted are summoned into the distant future by Kelly, and informed by the universe’s Great Leader (an amusingly imperious Holland Taylor) that they have to compose a great track to bring the world together and prevent the destruction of space and time. The boys, sublimely confident that they can do it, but unwilling to go through the faff of actually doing it, simply decide to time-travel forward to the point when it has been done and snatch the composition from their future selves. As Bill declares to Ted: “You have had many counterintuitive ideas over the years, but this is the counterintuitivest of all. ” But the Great Leader has an alternative plan to save the world, simply to kill Bill and Ted, for which she has trained a neurotic robot assassin called Dennis, channelling Douglas Adams’s Marvin the Paranoid Android — a nice turn from Anthony Carrigan. Photograph: Landmark Media/Alamy Stock Photo Bill and Ted’s wacky adventures and bizarre encounters with their own variously transformed selves run in parallel with the attempts of Thea and Billie to assemble their own universe-saving supergroup on their dads’ behalf. They travel back to the 1960s and recruit Jimi Hendrix (DazMann Still), to the 1920s to pick up Louis Armstrong (Jeremiah Craft) and then to 18th-century Salzburg to enlist Mozart (Daniel Dorr). The choice of classical musician here is surely a missed opportunity: Hendrix was renowned for living next door to the London house once occupied by GF Handel and, asked by a newspaper about it, he famously replied: “To tell you the God’s honest truth I haven’t heard much of the fella’s stuff. But I dig a bit of Bach now and again. ” But of course the most powerful musician of all is the Grim Reaper from Bergman’s Seventh Seal, first encountered in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey — funny stuff from William Sadler. It’s amiably amusing, and Bill and Ted’s Peter Pannish inability to accept the ageing process is enjoyably surreal, with a weird tinge of not-entirely-intentional tragedy. The failure to give Weaving and Lundy-Paine anything really funny to do is a problem; but all the cast are likable, and it’s a sweet-natured journey backwards and forwards down memory lane.
